One of the most common things that keeps us from living our dream-life is consistency.
We all know what we need to do to get us to where we want to be. There is no shortage of information, books, blogs, posts on every and any topic you want to search. So why don't we? Why do most of us still struggle with not only reaching our goals but even starting?
The answer is...consistency.
We all struggle with being consistent day in and day out. We start out with the best intentions but end up falling prey to our old habits and never getting to our potential; never actually knowing what would happen if we applied ourselves consistently.
So what's the best way to become and stay consistent? Here are my top tips:
KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE WHY
To do anything consistently, you need a compelling, clear vision of why you want to make the change. In order for you to sustain a new habit or behaviour consistently for a longer period of time, you need to understand why you want that thing in the first place. Before you give it your energy and time, write out your reasons. Write down any thoughts you have about the goal and get clear on what exactly it is you want to achieve. Create a picture in your mind of what it will look like when you get there. Create a picture of who you will be and who you need to be in order to get there. Imagine yourself already there. Write out an action plan and keep it on you at all times. If you know what your goals are, it will be much easier to plan accordingly and stick to that plan.
MAKE UP YOUR MIND
Don't dilute yourself. Pick one thing and stick with it. Not forever, just stick with it for a while. Give it the best shot you can by knowing it is what you want to do. We have a limited capacity when it comes to willpower and discipline. Having a clear idea of what it is you're woking on and why you're working towards it will help in staying motivated and consistent. Pick your priority and master the skills needed to make it work. Once you get one thing under control, you can move onto something else. Don't try to do it all at once, compartmentalize your life and concentrate on one area at a time.
Don’t prioritize your schedule, schedule your priorities. Many of us focus on the things that don't matter. We spend time on the planning, on the planner, on everything but the actual tasks that will get us to where we want to be. Build your whole life around the important things in your life. You don't need another 'to do' list. You need to figure out what needs to be done right now and then find a way to do it. If the time is not now, you need to schedule it and stick to the schedule. You need to make your productive time non-negotiable by scheduling it and sicking to it. It is the only way to get consistent progress.
IGNORE YOUR FEELINGS
Your mind loves what is familiar and doesn't like what is unfamiliar. Anytime you do a new thing, your mind will try to convince you to procrastinate and stray from it. Don’t give into that voice that says "I don’t feel like it". Just do it! You scheduled it for a reason so don't sabotage yourself. Your mind works for you and not the other way around. All you need to do is make what is unfamiliar familiar by repletion and your mind will soon follow suit. We all have days when we don’t feel like doing something we need to do. What separates the successful people from the rest, however is that they override. They override that feeling of 'let's do it later' and they push through the blocks. So today push through. Push through and give yourself the gift of achieving your goals. You're worth it.
DON'T BEAT YOURSELF UP
If you miss one thing, if you mess up, if you fail to do something or don't stick to your schedule, don’t beat yourself up. The path of life and success is not a straight line, it's a zig zag journey of trials, fails and successes. It's all a learning lesson and you will be that much smarter for your fails. If you fall off the wagon, all you need to do is get right back on it.
Tomorrow is a new day and you can start again.
