Defaulting on your resolutions? Try this.

"Everyday is a new opportunity to begin again. "

- Dalai Lama

I've spent years setting goals, setting New Year's resolutions. Telling myself...

"this time, it's going to be different".

Only to find myself sticking to my new to do list for about a week or two. And then life happens.

I'd wake up tired, and hit the snooze button. I'd have to work late, I skip the gym. And before you know it, I was in my old patterns tuning out my new goal, my new resolutions... saying...

"tomorrow. I'll start tomorrow".

Sounds familiar?

The good news is, there is a way out of this crazy spiral we all go through on the regular. All it takes is new choices, new habits and a new state of mind. But how do you get that?

Each day is a new day and a new opportunity to start fresh. Just because you slipped yesterday doesn’t mean you failed, and it doesn’t mean you’re hopeless. Each moment, each meal, each conversation is an opportunity to start over. As long as your heart is still beating, it's not too late. So don't give up on yourself just yet. Keep going. Get back to your plan and get to where we want to go. You will get there and it will work.

How do I know? I've been there, many, many times.

Here are the tools that have and still work for me:

Falling off the waggon does not mean you're a horrible person or that all is lost. All it means is that you're human and you're having an experience. Pick yourself up, get out of your funk and decide that this moment is where it stops. Everything is a learning lesson and that is all it is.

So get back to your plan. Right now.

Drink some water, do some jumping jacks, or take a nap. Do whatever you need to do to take you out of your current state. I know you're disappointed, I know you're not feeling well, and you're frustrated.

And I also know, you and only you have the power to change that, you and only you have the power to change your state. So get up and take charge of feeling great again.

Share your goals with someone you trust to be a support system for you. Call a friend or someone close to you who can offer words of encouragement to get you back on track towards your goals. Join a community of like minded people.

The web is a great free resource, full of inspirational stories that can serve as your support system. Watch YouTube videos that are positive and will offer you a different perspective. If you don't have anyone you want to share your goals with, be your own support system.

Write down your goals with dates of when you'd like to accomplish them by and actionable steps. Check in with your list daily and track your progress. This will keep you accountable to yourself and your goals and will really get you to where you want to be.

Finish today just as you are - just as it is - and don't be so hard on yourself. Before you fall asleep at night, revisit your goals. Write down a plan of action for yourself that you can take action on tomorrow.

Wake up in the morning and get back to your plan - drink some water, put on your running shoes and go for a walk. Non negotiable. Put yourself back into the state of feeling energetic and healthy and moving towards your goals with every decision you make.

Because in the end, your life is just a series of moments. Moments of choices and decisions that you've made. You are the one in control.

What action will you take today to get you to your goals?
